New WAVE Diesel Generators: Models, Power and Brain
Power for production and infrastructure: ten models with Volvo Penta engines, a 1,500 kVA containerised generator and Interkey Brain included as standard.
In this article
What is new in the WAVE range?
WAVE is expanding its range with eleven diesel generators, all with Interkey Brain as standard. Ten models with Volvo Penta engines cover published output figures from 80 to 536 kW at 50 Hz. They are joined by the WAVE Generator 1500: a sound-attenuated containerised unit with a Yuchai engine and a stated output of 1,500 kVA at 50 Hz.
The generators add a power-supply option to machinery projects. Whether the loads include freeze drying, refrigeration or other production equipment, the electrical load profile and intended operating duty are decisive. Sizing must account for both running loads and the starting behaviour of connected equipment.
All models are available in 50 or 60 Hz configurations. The output figures in this article refer to 50 Hz; the specifications of a particular 60 Hz configuration are confirmed in the quotation.
Models and prices at a glance
The Volvo range combines Volvo Penta diesel engines with Leroy-Somer alternators in a sound-attenuated enclosure. Published equipment features include a steel base frame, vibration isolators, a radiator for the water-cooled engine, a manual circuit breaker, a silencer and starter batteries.
The selection below illustrates the range. All ten Volvo models are listed in the WAVE generator comparison.
| Model | Engine | Published output | Net price including Brain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator Volvo 80 | Volvo TAD580VE | 80 kW | €32,024 |
| Generator Volvo 120 | Volvo TAD880GE | 120 kW | €38,570 |
| Generator V250 | Volvo TAD882GE | 200 kW | €62,700 |
| Generator V400 | Volvo TAD1382GE | 320 kW | €74,100 |
| Generator V660 | Volvo TWD1683GE | 536 kW | €124,450 |
| Generator 1500 | Yuchai YC12VTD2000-D30 | 1,500 kVA | €174,287.85 |
Prices exclude VAT, transport and commissioning. Model names are not reliable indicators of output in kW: the V250, for example, is listed at 200 kW. kVA and kW are different quantities. The confirmed specifications and scope of supply in the individual quotation take precedence.
Generator 1500: a containerised unit for larger projects
The Generator 1500 combines a Yuchai YC12VTD2000-D30 engine with a Leroy-Somer alternator and a SmartGen controller. Published specifications include 400/230 V, 1,500 kVA at 50 Hz and an integrated 1,500-litre fuel tank. Tank capacity alone does not establish runtime: consumption at the intended load and usable fuel volume are also needed.
What does Interkey Brain do?
Interkey Brain is standard equipment on every WAVE generator and is included in the published price. It brings together available controller data and additional sensor information to support operating overviews, maintenance insights and AI-assisted remote analysis.
- Understand operating conditions: engine speed, operating hours, oil pressure, coolant temperature and fault codes can be included where the particular controller makes them available.
- Identify changes: suitable sensors reveal temperature and vibration trends. Unusual readings can be compared with earlier operating conditions at a comparable load.
- Prepare service visits: measurements, alerts and available image and audio signals help the service team prepare. Remote access requires a suitable internet connection.
- Assess load and runtime: electrical measurements show utilisation and load peaks. They can help identify unnecessary running time and plan machine starts where the control system supports coordinated operation.
Sensor connections and available signals are specified for the individual generator set. Brain does not guarantee a particular fuel saving or the prevention of every failure. Engine protection, voltage regulation and frequency control remain with the designated generator controller.
Understanding kW, kVA and operating duty
kW measures active power; kVA measures apparent power. At a given operating point: active power in kW = apparent power in kVA × power factor. With an assumed power factor of 0.8, 1,500 kVA corresponds mathematically to 1,200 kW. This is a calculation example, not an additional approved power rating for the Generator 1500.
Operating duty matters just as much. A figure labelled “output” or “standby” must not automatically be treated as a confirmed PRP, ESP or continuous-duty rating. The permitted load profile, operating hours, ambient conditions and project-specific rating must suit the application and be clearly stated in the quotation.
A simple percentage allowance on the sum of nameplate ratings is often insufficient. Compressors and pumps can impose different loads when starting. Simultaneous demand, starting sequence and sensitive equipment therefore belong in the sizing assessment.
Choosing the right generator
WAVE first needs a description of the intended operation. These five inputs make a sound recommendation possible:
- Load list: machines, electrical ratings, available measurements and known starting currents.
- Operating duty: backup during grid outages, temporary off-grid operation or regular supply, including expected running hours.
- Electrical supply and transfer: required voltage, frequency, phases and transfer arrangement. Automatic mains transfer must be specified separately.
- Site: installation conditions, ambient temperature, altitude, space and requirements for noise, ventilation and exhaust routing.
- Service and connectivity: maintenance planning, commissioning, internet availability and the intended integration of Brain into machine operation.
Installation, electrical connection and commissioning must be carried out by qualified professionals. A sound-attenuated enclosure does not replace a site-specific assessment. Binding noise values, applicable emissions requirements and other evidence are clarified for the particular configuration.
Frequently asked questions about WAVE generators
Which diesel generators does WAVE offer?
WAVE offers ten models with Volvo Penta engines and published output figures from 80 to 536 kW at 50 Hz, plus the Generator 1500 with a Yuchai engine and 1,500 kVA at 50 Hz. Interkey Brain is included as standard on all eleven models.
Is Brain included in the price?
Yes. Interkey Brain is standard equipment on all WAVE generators. Sensor connections are matched to the individual generator set; remote access requires a suitable internet connection.
How much does a WAVE diesel generator cost?
The published entry price for the Generator Volvo 80 is €32,024 excluding VAT, including Brain. The Generator 1500 is listed at €174,287.85 excluding VAT. Transport and commissioning are additional. Catalogue prices checked on 24 September 2026.
Does the Generator V250 deliver 250 kW?
No. V250 is the model name. The published figures for the 50 Hz configuration are 200 kW output and 220 kW standby. The binding power rating for the intended operation is confirmed in the quotation.
Can a generator supply a freeze dryer?
A correctly sized generator can form part of a freeze-drying project's power supply. Selection must consider running electrical load, compressor and pump starting behaviour, other loads and requirements for voltage, frequency and operating duty.
Are 60 Hz generators available?
Yes. All models are available in 50 or 60 Hz configurations. Output figures in this article apply to 50 Hz. Specifications for the requested 60 Hz configuration are confirmed in the individual quotation.
